    Recent Events

In the last quarter of 2022, we hosted two online webinars. The October zoom, titled Cutting Methane in the Oil and Gas Sector: Progress and Prospects, welcomed speaker Ben Cahill. In November, our very own Mark Finley and guest speaker Joon Ha Kim discussed carbon border adjustments. Thank you to TJ Conway, NCAC Vice President, for moderating both events.

    “Perspectives on Clean Energy Technologies”

    Ellen Hughes-Cromwick

Senior Resident Fellow - Climate & Energy Program, Third Way

With the opportunity to create trillions of dollars in sales, millions of jobs, and a more secure supply of energy, the global market for clean technologies is a prize worth competing for. America has dealt itself a good hand–world-class innovation and manufacturing capabilities, a skilled workforce, and a recent surge in federal investment that could supercharge our advantage in clean energy. But the US still has to play its cards right if it wants to take the lead in these fiercely competitive industries.

That’s why Third Way partnered with Breakthrough Energy and Boston Consulting Group on groundbreaking analysis to identify promising industries for the country to prioritize, and smart industrial strategies that let the US play to its strengths and lock-in a global advantage. A more competitive America brings rewards home–but it also delivers better products and services on a global scale, producing energy that is clean, affordable, reliable, and secure. When America leads, the world wins.

    Save-the-Date: Annual Policy Conference - April 13

    Georgetown University

Energy security has come to the fore, as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine plus pandemic-related market dislocations have stoked what some have called the world’s first energy crisis. At the same time, the imperative to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon energy system has only grown as global temperatures continue to rise.

All too often, international press coverage pits these issues against one another – emphasizing the tensions between energy priorities of affordability, reliability, and sustainability. To be sure, the world needs to be clear-eyed about the challenges and tradeoffs in meeting climate and energy security goals. But we cannot lose sight of the opportunities available to address these priorities jointly – and examples abound in major policy packages like the US Inflation Reduction Act and Europe’s REPowerEU.

This year’s conference will focus on the emerging opportunities we have to increase our energy security while also accelerating the energy transition. We will first take stock of the state of the energy transition and markets, asking where we are now, where we are headed, and what steps stakeholders – governments, companies, investors, and civil society – can take to address energy security and transition priorities. The conference will then drill into key technologies and investment opportunities that can help us achieve these dual objectives, with the right policy incentives.

    Stay tuned for registration information.

    Careers in Energy Policy

    Wednesday, March 22, 2023

    6:00-8:30 p.m. EST

    National Press Club, Washington D.C.

Are you interested in a career in energy, the environment, and public policy? Do you want to network with people who work in energy policy?

Please join the Women in Energy initiative at the Center on Global Energy Policy, Columbia SIPA and Georgetown University’s Women in Public Policy Initiative for a networking reception in Washington, D.C. In addition to networking, women with exceptional careers will discuss their career paths, and share advice on the skills required to be successful in their fields. Light refreshments will be served.

CGEP’s Women in Energy (WIE) initiative envisions a world with equal gender representation at every level within the energy sector. Our mission is to elevate women and enhance inclusion within the energy workforce by developing and sharing research, expanding entry into the sector, and supporting professionals. In order to expand entry into the sector, WIE hosts events that provide networking opportunities and highlight women who have successfully entered and thrived in energy policy.

The Women in Public Policy Initiative (WiPPI) is dedicated to developing exceptional leaders in public policy and increasing awareness of issues that disproportionately affect women and girls through strategic partnerships, service, and advocacy. As an organization, WiPPI strives to increase the visibility of women in the policy arenas both inside and outside of the Georgetown University community.

More information about the panelists is forthcoming.

    Best,

Bryn Kirk and Martha Moore, NCAC Secretaries
