Description: The first stop on Thursday is the National Energy Technology Laboratory in Morgantown, one of a handful of such facilities in the country. Significant research on coal and carbon capture is performed at the lab for the Department of Energy.

After lunch, the group will be given a tour of Longview Power, a 700 megawatt coal-fired generator built in 2011 in nearby Maidsville, WV, that employs the best available emissions control technology and is one of the most efficient such plants in the country.

NCAC members specifically are asked to bring their expertise and insight to share with each other and industry experts at both of these facilities.

  • Short presentation by USAEE Pittsburgh member Chris Nichols.

  • Cold Flow Circulating Bed This lab houses a 12in diameter, 50 ft. tall circulating fluidized bed used to improve knowledge of gas/solid flows with application to Gasification, Combustion, Carbon Capture, and Chemical Looping. This lab also houses small scale concept reactors such as the rotating fluidized bed, the vortex bed, and solid/solid separation devices.

  • Carbon Capture Simulation Initiative Overview The Carbon Capture Simulation Initiative (CCSI) is a partnership among five national laboratories, industry, and academic institutions including members of the NETL-Regional University Alliance. CCSI is focused on the development, demonstration, and deployment advanced computational modeling and simulation tools to accelerate the development of carbon capture technologies with the goal of widespread deployment to hundreds of power plants. The tools developed by CCSI will provide industry end users with a comprehensive, integrated suite of scientifically validated models, with uncertainty quantification, optimization, risk analysis, and decision-making capabilities.
